Clair de Lune

A famous French writer Guy de Maupassant is remembered as the master of adventure novels and modern short stories, painting many aspects of French life in the 19th century. A prolific writer, Maupassant published over 310 short stories and novels during his life time. 

“Clair de Lune” is a short story, published in 1884. The action takes place in a garden near the monastery, where the reader meets with Abbe Marignan, the priest, who in spite of having a niece hates women and the way they exist as temptation to men. The conflict is set when the sacristan’wife, Melanie, confides to him that his niece has a lover and that the couple meets by 10 in the evening when her mother and the Abbe are already fast asleep…
