Colorectal cancer has an important place in the field of oncology as, in the United States, it is currently the second most common cause of cancer-related death.Advances in the field of oncologic surgery and in the development of specific anticancer drugs, together with the technological revolution in diagnostic imaging and molecular biology, could explain the decreasing trend observed in mortality due to this neoplasm.In recent years, great advances have been made in the study of colorectal cancer through an increased understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in its development and of the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the disease.
