As for anyone who says “the manual is blank” I had the SAME issue at first. Drove me crazy. The fix is simple though.
All you need to do is toggle off Apple Books’ “scrolling mode” by clicking the “Aa” buttons at the top right of the app. I wish that were more clear beforehand.

This is a thorough and informative manual.
I did have to delete and reload my Apple Books app so the pages weren’t blank - probably needed updating. After the update manual opened presented like a charm.
Definitely a must read to use the app and its great features...
