1. Introduction The 2002 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was awarded to Vernon Smith "for having established laboratory experiments as a tool in empirical economic analysis." (1) Professor Smith's contributions have had profound effects far beyond the theoretical and empirical advances of experimental economics for which he was honored.
