From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Jurassic Park and Timeline comes a gripping thriller about the shocking demise of eight American geologists in the darkest region of the Congo.

“Thrilling.” —The New York Times Book Review

Deep in the African rainforest, near the ruins of the Lost City of Zinj, a field expedition is brutally killed. At the Houston-based Earth Resources Technology Services, Inc., a horrified supervisor watches a gruesome video transmission of that ill-fated group and sees a haunting, grainy, man-like blur moving amongst the bodies. In San Francisco, an extraordinary gorilla named Amy, who has a 620-sign vocabulary, may hold the secret to that fierce carnage. Immediately, a new expedition is sent to the Congo with Amy in tow, descending into a secret, forbidden world where the only escape may be through the grisliest death.

Slow start

When the action kicks up, this is one of the most thrilling reads I’ve ever had. The problem is that a large portion of the book is spent read acronym after acronym and obscure protocol after obscure protocol. I didn’t even know what the f the ERTS did until well after the action started. And if you don’t know what the ERTS is, you’ve been as informed as someone reading the first five or so chapters lol I stuck with it, though and was rewarded. The action is really, really good. I read mainly at lunch breaks at work, and there were many times I didn’t want to stop reading… so I didn’t. All in all, it’s a worth-while read, just be prepared for the slow, confusing start, though I love the biotech angle it takes on for a second. Also, I was getting a theme about the nature of animals, including people, that was really interesting. Unfortunately, I didn’t connect with it until the end, otherwise the beginning might have been more enjoyable.

Great Read

Always loved the movie as a kid and glad I finally got to read what one of my favorite movies had come from

A good read

As usual Michael Crichton’s novels provide scientific facts in their stories. The book is a quick read and is so much better than the movie.
