Hard Choices

Not bad, not bad. After finishing the third and final book in this series, I’m happy to report that it was a journey that was fun and rarely tedious.

Kaia is a likable heroine, although if she’d dropped her weapon one more time I would have stopped reading.

Not much world-building goes on, and we spend way too much time in caves and tunnels. I have zero grasp of the kingdom for which Kaia sacrifices nearly everything. I know it has trees and (lots of) caves…and some wildlife. I know it’s bordered by several other kingdoms, but I couldn’t tell you anything about them. The castle in which so many of the pivotal scenes transpire lacks credible description. Even the one gown that Kaia agrees to wear is merely that: a gown. No color, fabric, style…just a “gown.”

The strength of this series lies within the truly impossible romance created with steady craft by the author. It’s complex and at times heartbreaking. I confess I was hoping for a different outcome, but that’s the thing about triangles, there’s always an outlier or two like me rooting for the truly impossible.

This world is filled with unique magic, and those who wield it are this side of fascinating. The author went out of her way to make the Big Bad terrifying, but undercut her efforts in several major ways. Since he’s one point of the love triangle, it had to be done. There are 2-3 lesser villains who help keep the tension alive. And of course, there is The Choice that Kaia must finally make. Trust me, it’s a choice no 16-year-old should be forced to make. But she makes it, bless her heart. And here we are.

I’ve just read three horrible YA fantasy romance series in a row, each one boasting a useless female protagonist I’d just like to trip when no one’s looking. These books were a breath of fresh air and I tip my hat to Kaia and the woman who created her.

Last note: I have no idea if authors bother reading these ramblings, but hey. Three books with V and you literally write him out with dialogue? Who let you get away with that? Tsk.
