PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
An adult ballerina recalls her difficult teenage years in this intriguing supernatural boarding school mystery, a graphic novel from Kearney (Learning New Tricks). Opening pages introduce Rosamund Hammond, a famous ballerina celebrating her retirement performance. Prompted by a reporter, who mentions that her "student days were marked by tragedy"—the death of a classmate—Rosamund unspools the story. Chapters broken up by ballet's five basic foot positions follow teen Rosamund as she transfers into competitive, all-girls ballet school Saint Anselmus partway through her senior year of high school, after another student, Giovanna, takes a leave of absence. Rosamund's roommate and Giovanna's self-proclaimed best friend Eugenie is convinced that foul play influenced Giovanna's withdrawal. As the roommates prepare for their senior showcase ballet, they interrogate faculty members and attempt to commune with spirits. Throughout the inquiry, Rosamund starts experiencing hallucinations and pushing past her limits to meet the headmistress's lofty expectations, events that expertly ramp up the plot tension and unpredictability. Dramatic monochromatic blue-toned artwork depicts Rosamund's deteriorating mental state as beautiful moths that swarm her vision. It's a sturdy and chilling rendition of dark academia. Ages 14–up.
