Counterparts

From out of our past the author conjures us all:  America and Vietnam in 1968.  Two women doctors, one Vietnamese, one American, live through the 60’s and 70’s in warring societies, before their lives meld in Honolulu of the 1980’s.  Most of us know about the turmoil, protest and chaos in the America of those days—but do you know about the the suffering, the courage and the ambivalence of the Vietnamese people, no matter which side they were on?  As mothers and daughters, as wives and friends these two women had their lives ripped apart by the War and by what it was like to be a woman in that era.
