The Helicon series is a soapy, irreverent portal fantasy wherein the drama of teen relationships tends to overshadow whatever magical threat they're trying to fight. Lots of drinking, swearing, inappropriate sexual decisions, grappling with sexual orientation and gender, and random appearances by mythological figures thrown in for good measure. It's genre-bending, impossible to categorize, and for everyone out there who equally loves Gossip Girl, Rocky Horror, and Narnia.

Just meh. Sorry.
I tried to like this but it didn’t do it for me. Owen seems a bit predatory in a very awkward way. He’s protecting her from something that wants to kill her, but he’s also kissing her. Just gross.
Beyond creepy Owen, the writing style isn’t my cup of tea. I don’t like it when words are omitted for the sake of, I don’t know, action or something. Meanwhile it just feels unfinished or lazy. I’ve met the word count requirement. Next book.
My example:
“Later, her stomach full, she sat cross-legged next to the fire, music swelling around her and Owen.”
Why couldn’t it be something like:
“Later, with her stomach satisfyingly full, she sat cross-legged close to the fire. Music swelled around her and Owen, though she couldn’t quite tell where it was coming from. It relaxed her and she found herself becoming even more interested in her new environment than she expected to.”
But, yaknow, let’s skip out on words for the sake of ACTION. Okay there.
Does your publisher hate you?
I was going to download the book and give it a try but the note at the end of the description… I’m paraphrasing but it describes the book as “soapy and irreverent and full of teen drama that overshadows everything else.” Maybe the publisher was trying to be sassy but the description came off as off putting. Just describe it as YA Fantasy and let the reader decide if it’s soapy.
