Publisher Description
A disgraced Toronto police detective tries to save a missing teenage girl in a novel that “ramps up the suspense to fever pitch” (Publishers Weekly).
He may have been cleared of murder charges, but that doesn’t mean Steve Nastos’s troubles are over. Some of his former colleagues on the force still think he belongs in prison, and his wife wants him to finally free himself from the darkness that has been fueling his law enforcement career—and his life.
But he’s made a promise to a stranger: to find Lindsay Bannerman, a troubled teenager who has gone missing from her upper-class adoptive home. Teaming up with his similarly disgraced lawyer, he is about to unravel a tale of sadistic abuse and follow a trail littered with lies, deceptions, and lifeless bodies . . .
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Cain's unrelentingly dark follow-up to Cherry Beach Express, the first Steve Nastos mystery, finds the former Toronto cop quitting his dull work for an insurance company and teaming up with lawyer Kevin Carscadden in a bid to locate missing teenager Lindsay Bannerman. Lindsay and other young girls are being held captive from the story's opening, and their terrible plight and eventual fate is made clear when one of them is gruesomely slaughtered. But their captors, psychic Anthony Raines and his life partner, Chavez Vega Alvarez, really cross the line when they set their sights on someone close to Carscadden and Nastos. The duo shucks off the rules of fair play and goes for broke in a last ditch effort to rescue those still alive before it's too late. Cain ramps up the suspense to fever pitch and follows the exciting ending with an ambiguous d nouement that augurs another story.
