A dark roast can be deadly…
Lainey Boggins is desperate to report a story that's more interesting than a church bake-off. But sleepy mountain town Aurora Heights is hardly the place for murder and mayhem. The biggest story of the week is the opening of a new cat café, which Lainey reluctantly agrees to cover.
But when the town's beloved mayor drops dead at the cafe's opening, the town is shocked. His death is ruled an accident, but Lainey isn't convinced.
Now, Lainey is thrust into a web of lies that she can't untangle. It turns out the jolly old mayor wasn't so jolly after all, and he had a lot more secrets than Lainey bargained for. With the help of Dylan, the cute café owner, and even cuter detective, Nick DeLuca, she's unraveling the mayor's private life and finding out his secrets. But if Lainey isn't careful, she could be next.

Drinking Coffee Can be Hazardous to Your Health
The first in the Lainey Boggs Mystery series by Nikolett Strachan, Dark Roasted to Death, is a great read and a wonderful start to a new cozy mystery series. Lainey Boggins is a features reporter for her small town of Aurora Heights but she is hoping to move up to harder hitting stories as soon as possible. When circumstances (writing a fluff piece about a coffee shop opening) place her in the right place at the right time, her editor gives her the chance to write about "real" news. As she stumbles through her first investigation, she manages to antagonize not only the local detective assigned to the case and the people she believes are suspects. With the help of her former high school crush and owner of the coffee shop, she finds the real perpetrator, solves her first case and writes her first front page articles. Not only did I like the story (even though it started off a little slow) but I really liked the characters and their interactions. I highly recommend this great first book as it's a fantastic read.
