Publisher Description
All the way there David had saved this moment for himself, struggling not to peek until the proper time came. When the car finally stopped, the rest of them got out stiffly and went into the new house. But David walked slowly into the back yard with his eyes fixed on the ground. For a whole minute he stood there, not daring to look up. Then he took a deep breath, clenched his hands tightly, and lifted his head. There it was!—as Dad had described it, but infinitely more grand. It swept upward from the valley floor, beautifully shaped and soaring, so tall that its misty blue peak could surely talk face to face with the stars. To David, who had never seen a mountain before, the sight was almost too much to bear.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
In keeping with the legend of the Phoenix, Full Cast Audio resurrects a long-out-of-print gem for this thoroughly engaging production. Ormondroyd reads his gentle fantasy-adventure with a grandfatherly ease and warmth. Listeners will quickly become enthralled as young David climbs the mountain behind his family's new house and encounters a magical, talking phoenix on one of the high ledges. David overcomes his initial fear and shock and tentatively joins in the fun. Though the bird at first seems like a pretentious fussbudget, he proves (in a spirited performance by Frank Flumano) to be a wonderful and extremely knowledgeable pal. Soon David's feathered friend is leading the boy on a series of colorful exploits amidst such creatures as a sea monster, Gryffins and a banshee. A well-balanced group of performers keeps the dramatic pacing on keel, skillfully, subtly holding listeners' interest. Ages 8-up.
Customer Reviews
Wonderful imaginative Read!
This is one of my favorite books from childhood. It's a wonderful adventure that is so well written that you feel as though you know the characters personally...even the amazing, mythological & magical phoenix. I believe it will become one of your favorites and one you will want to share, too.
