TunaFish#5 ,

Great story, if only Gogol hasn't burned his last chapters

Dead Souls is purported to be the original Russian novel. Don't fear, though- it's not as long as the reputation of Russian novels would suggest.
The story is a Sears-Roebuck catalog of Russian personality types. It's actually a good read, fairly humorous in many parts.
