Kids playing pranks? Or something more serious? Could these trespassers have something to do with a much bigger, big-city crime?
What starts out as a perfunctory investigation soon escalates. Will Dixon, Arch Hepler, and new rookie Solomon discover the truth before Mapleton sees its first homicide in decades?
Deadly Assumptions, a cross between a cozy mystery and a police procedural, is the seventh offering in Terry Odell's Mapleton Mystery series. It, like all the others, can be read as a stand alone.

Deadly Assumptions
Deadly Assumptions was my first visit to Mapleton, but I loved the small town coziness of it. In Deadly Assumptions, we meet two of the main characters reminiscing about a fellow former officer. A series of trespassing incidents is the main event in the story.
I really enjoy cozy mysteries, not so much for the plot lines, but for the small town life and the unique cast of characters that tend to show up. Odell does an excellent job of making newcomers to Mapleton feel welcome. Although this is book #7, I didn't feel like I needed to read any of the prior books to feel connected to the characters and the story. I am planning to go back and read them, however.
I know this is billed as a novella, but I did wish it had been a little longer. The story was definitely complete, but I wanted to see more of Ed Solomon's life prior to the reminiscence occurring, especially interactions with his wife. I'm sure there's more of that in the novels, but a little bit of a "previously in Mapleton...." would have been helpful.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading past and future books from Odell.
