Death Comes for the Archbishop.
Elegiac writing and, for the receptive reader, a wonderful respite from current American angst-driven entertainment. Willa Cather’s elegant but simple prose often shows you landscapes that take your breath away; and you thought only Technicolor could do that. Count the number of times you have to go back to be sure of who is speaking, or being referred to, even though the whole book is mainly about just two French clerics. My count was high and sometimes I still wasn’t sure. Father Latour and Father Vaillant are summoned for the reader as often by their changing titles or positions as by their names. Or don’t bother: the story is enchanting even without being sure of who’s whom. (Whom?)
