Spy Thriller disguised as a romance

The author self-selects this book to be a romance and it definitely has a romantic component, but it really is an outstandingly well done spy thriller. The over-arching story is not finished in this volume, but the two main characters’ story is complete. I wish I could say that I look forward to more from this author, but it appears that after completing this single book she never did anything else. I would exhort her for more, but based upon the time lag so far, I doubt more is likely.

I have read many spy/thriller books, and heroes in other books seem to either be remorseless killers or angsty, guilt ridden, reluctant actors in their missions. Jared seems to land in some middle ground that recognizes killing is not a naturally good thing, but the bad actors he’s fighting against won’t hesitate to kill him and harm the world at large, so he’s forced to act violently and decisively to save innocents and innocence. Svetlana is believable as a good main female character, and she is a strong actor not some wilting TSTL damsel in distress. I found the pacing of the story engaging and taut, the crisis points believable and the ingress and egress of the characters throughout the various scenes to be realistic. My willing suspension of disbelief really wasn’t taxed much at all.

Overall this was one of the best books I have read in a while, and it’s unfortunate that the author seems to be MIA, because I would very much like to see more from her and more from this world of characters.
