Customer Reviews
Wow, just wow!
Where do I even begin?!?!I've been obsessed with Conner and Jamel's tale from book one! It's really great to see an interracial relationship depicted with honesty and candor.I especially like how the main characters are not caricatures, but rather real people with flaws, insecurities, a history, and layers.
Conner and Jamel have been through a lot to be together. They have weathered racist insults, Conner's abusive father, Jamel's petty brother Ty, and Conner's insistence on maintaining a mostly closeted life. But the book describes their story in a very different way; they aren't battling to be together because of outside factors; their barriers to a happy existence are entirely of their own design, based on their own fears.I like reading Jamel's perspective on Conner's outbursts--Conner's POV mentions Jamel's calm demeanor, but the author's decision to narrate the disputes from his POV this time provides a completely different perspective on the "non-fights" Conner feels they have.I particularly appreciate the author's decision to include infertility and the decision to have or not have children in this story--it is a real challenge that many couples face and may shatter a relationship if not talked about with honesty and vulnerability.
There are so many depths to this love story that I would be overjoyed if it continued, but because the author did not give a sample of future book, I will presume we have seen the last of Conner and Jamel in print.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
