This Gripping Legal Thriller Is a Perfect Summer Read
When Jared Neaton grew tired of the shady ethics of his big law firm and left to go out on his own, he never expected the wheels to fly off so quickly. One big case collapsing on him has pushed him to the brink and it's all he can do to scrape by. He can't risk another bad loss.
Erin Larson is running out of options. In the wake of her father's death, she found a slim piece of paper--a deposit slip--with an unbelievable amount on it. Ten million dollars. Only the bank claims it has no record of the deposit and stonewalls her attempts to find out more. This lawsuit, her last chance, has brought only intimidation and threats. Now she needs to convince Jared to take a risk, to help her because the money is real. And both need to watch their backs as digging deeper unleashes something far more dangerous than just threats.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Debut novelist Johnson, like fellow Christian novelists James Scott Bell and Randy Singer, has worked many years as a trial lawyer, a profession that seems to serve budding novelists well, perhaps not because they are accustomed to framing and structuring narratives of event but because they have seen much of the underbelly of society. When Erin Larson finds a deposit slip for $10 million in her recently deceased father's safety deposit box, she hires Jared Neaton to help her find out where the money came from and why she never saw any signs of it. To take the case, Neaton must return to his hometown and face his father, who did time in prison for embezzlement. Johnson writes vividly; describing Neaton's fathers eyes, he writes, "They showed no fight; only a rush of unexpected pain. It drained all the satisfaction out of the rage, seeing his dad like a fighter who wouldn't raise his gloves." With an irresistible set-up, suspense, a subtle love triangle, strong dialogue, characters, and a focused plot, Johnson makes a strong first literary case.

Wonderful
This book was an excellent summer read! The beginning, while seemingly disconnected webbed itself into a tale of mystery, murder and deceit. The character development was outstanding, unlike many other books that I have read, Todd Johnson created a world where each characters motivations, fears and reasoning was revealed to you as you read making the characters relatable and more real. The plot kept me on the edge of my seat and unlike many books, the twists and turns were not always predictable. Overall I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a thrilling mystery or even an example of great writing. I will definitely keep my eyes open for more of Todd Johnson's work and I can't wait for the series to continue.
