The sport of wrestling has a history dating back to ancient times as one of the original Olympic sports. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) conducted its first men's wrestling championship in 1928. Participation in NCAA wrestling has declined slowly since the 1970s. In the 1988-1989 academic year, 286 schools were sponsoring varsity NCAA men's wrestling teams, with 6969 participants. By 2003-2004, the number of varsity teams had decreased 23% to 224, involving 5943 participants.
