A review for Andrew Pressman’s Design Thinking

Today’s environment is providing rapid insight through the development of artificial intelligence and technology. In his book Design Thinking: A guide for creative problem solving for everyone, author and architect Andrew Pressman provided the rules and applications of design thinking as a problem solving method. Pressman included applications to solving problems in the fields of architecture, product design, writing, medicine, and several others. It is enough to help students who want to learn about design thinking as a theory in practice.

The texbook helps students define and identify its application through several real life case studies. Pressman discussed how design thinking has been successfully applied to develop good solutions for complex problems in recent times. He also shared the leading thoughts that have designed and led to those solutions. His purpose and writing are clear and so is his love for the theory. We can use design thinking to accomplish much even in our daily lives.

Students can easily grasp the context of the literature to help them develop their own strengths. Understanding the context of the applications and its innovative solutions will help students who are exploring the design thinking method. The book featured chapters focused on business, health and science, law, and writing. Some of the cases studied included applications to pharmaceutical product design, cancer treatment, writing drafts, iterative design, culinary arts, technology, and problem definition.

I recommend this book because it provides clear definitions of familiar terms that design students encounter on the field. For example, the word iterative, which is defined as the process of repetition, is one common word that many students find in the field of practice. The author is quick with his analysis of the theory and also provided clear standards to meet in his philosophy. Design thinking is approached as a proven theory that will work in many fields and it only increases my understanding for other use cases such as film, and game or level design.
