Publisher Description
Love means loss.
Alana Jacobs knows that better than anyone. After witnessing an unspeakable act of violence, she is left alone and afraid in a group home in Langley. Then she meets Jackson “Jax” Cade. In each other, they find a purpose in life, an unbreakable bond that will withstand the test of time… until that tie is severed.
Some secrets are never meant to be kept.
Jax is willing to do anything to protect his best friend, no matter the cost. What he doesn’t realize is that Alana is willing to do the same. When the truth comes out, devastation follows. Leaving Alana wasn’t Jax’s decision, but saving her was.
Manipulation and deception go hand in hand.
Paul Randall is the master of exploitation, capable of crawling inside the mind of his victims with ease. He will go to any lengths to get what he wants, and what he wants is Alana Jacobs. Falling in love with your prey is a game changer, but old habits are hard to break.
Happiness always comes at a price.
Hearts will be broken and pain will be inevitable, but losing yourself is irreparable.
WARNING:
The characters in this story overcame horrific neglect and abuse, both mental and physical, and have taken extreme steps to survive during their journey through the darkness into the light.
Due to graphic content and mature subject matter (explicit language, acts of violence, sexual content both consensual and not, drug use, prostitution and sex-trafficking), this book should not be purchased by readers under the age of 18 or the faint of heart.

Beautiful and painful journey you NEED to travel!
WHAT THE F*@K JUST HAPPENED???
That thought was what kept popping into my mind over and over again while reading this. Other things I've asked myself- Why haven't I read Kira Johns before? and Why doesn't this book have 5 star amazon reviews way up in the triple digits? and How could my reading friends not force me to read her sooner? I won an ebook of Desolate Souls and I'm so grateful I did or I may have went even longer without knowing what greatness I was missing out on.
This story is not for the faint of heart and if you are easily triggered by sexual/emotional/physical violence then you might want to stay away. Alana's story is dark, terrible, heartbreaking and very REAL. To the reviewer that said these characters weren't realistic, I'd like to tell them that they've obviously lived in a bubble their entire lives surrounded by rainbows with pots of gold at the end. Rape, abuse, human trafficking, forced prostitution...these things are too real in our world and if you want to choose to ignore that truth, then go ahead and do that. But don't say things like that aren't realistic, because the victims would surely beg to differ with you.
I read the whole thing in one sitting....no way could I take a break and not know what happened next. I didn't know if this was a love story between Alana and Paul, or Alana and Jax, or neither one. I didn't know who was a "good guy" and who was "bad guy", who was going to get a happily ever after, or if maybe there is no such thing. I had no idea where circumstances were heading and I was emotionally connected enough to ALL the characters that I was immensely affected by their outcomes.
This is a story of love, hate, loss, growth, abuse, recovery, self-loathing, and many other ugly aspects of life. But it's also about finding the beauty within that ugliness and holding on to it for dear life, knowing that it may be fleeting and must be treasured.
I'm definitely getting the rest of the series, and every other book by Kira. If you're an MC fan you'll love it, although this is NOT your typical MC story. It takes MC writing to a much deeper level than many others. I'm placing Kira johns up in my list of greatest MC writers along the likes of Autumn Jones Lake, Carmen Jenner, Jaci J, MariaLisa deMora, and Lauren Gilley. She deserves it!
