Publisher Description
The last thing Samantha Powers expected to do on her first official trip as a travel writer was help solve a murder.
Samantha ("Sam") Powers, a 34-year-old investigative reporter, has returned to her hometown of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, to take care of her ailing father, the town's former police chief. At the urging of a family friend, she takes a job as the new travel columnist for Carmel Today, a local lifestyle magazine.
After a few months of writing about area hotels and restaurants and navigating the office dynamics at her new position, Sam sets out on her first big press trip to a luxury resort on the Hawaiian island of Maui. There she meets her fellow travel writers and the resort representatives hosting the trip, all of whom become suspects when one of the writers-someone almost everyone had a reason to want to kill-is found dead in his suite. Sam's detective skills come in handy as she helps the handsome (and, yes, single) Maui detective solve the crime.
"Destination: Maui" is the first in the Destination Murder Mystery series, which combines exotic locales and a behind-the-scenes look at the travel industry with the twists and turns expected from a good mystery.

Murder in Maui
Samantha, Sam Powers had been an investigative journalist in LA until she got a call from her Uncle Henry saying she needed to come back home and help with her dad. He’d been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and Henry needed the help. In truth it was a way for Sam to reboot as she’d been getting burnt out in LA after coming into contact daily with the worst of humanity to write her stories and the rest of her life was kinda in a standstill. So home she went to Carmel which led to a new job, new opportunities and a murder on a trip to paradise aka Maui. The deceased a member of the group of travel writers that Sam is a part of was universally disliked. He was rude, mean, petty and unpleasant in most situations. He had alienated every other member of the tour save Sam as this is her first big assignment as a travel writer. Though enjoying her work trip/adventure Sam still manages to get people to open up about Alistair the deceased. Unofficially doing some sleuthing as she was the last person to see Alistair alive. Even when she’s warned to stay in her lane by the police Sam can’t quite help herself and still keeps digging.
Lots of action and a wonderfully surprising mystery. Of course it all takes place in Maui which comes alive through vivid descriptions. An excellent blend of journalism, travel and mystery and a thoroughly enjoyable read.
