Dialectics Between Splitting and Integrating in the Lives of Heterosexually Married Gay Men (Report‪)‬

1. Introduction The Mixed-orientation marriage is usually an invisible phenomenon, but its frequency is not insignificant. No accurate estimate of the prevalence of heterosexually married gay men is available in the literature [1]. Kinsey [2] estimated that 1.7-1.9% of heterosexually married men are homosexuals. A survey using a probability sample of gay males found that 42% of the men who self-identified as homosexuals or bisexuals had previously been married to a woman [3]. Other studies show that 20% of homosexuals had been married to a woman at some point in their lives [4-6]. A more recent study [7] shows that an estimated two million homosexuals, lesbians and bisexuals in the US had, at some time in their lives, been part of a mixed-orientation marriage.
