PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Weyn's historical novel climaxes with the sinking of the Titanic, but it begins in 1898 when narrator Jane, the second of five sisters, is four years old and observing her mother, a medium, contact the spirit world for the first time. That same life-changing day, on their way to a spiritualist community outside Buffalo, N.Y., the newly-fatherless family is caught in an artificial earthquake caused by real-life scientist Nikola Tesla. The beginning of the novel centers on the girls' mother's spiritual work, with Jane unsure of her mother's clairvoyance. Science has an equally important role, as Jane becomes obsessed with Tesla, following his career in the paper and then seeking him out. The story's pace is slow, but it picks up as the years pass, and Jane falls in love with Tesla's assistant, Thad. After a trip to England, the sisters find themselves on the Titanic-the author uses a touch of the fantastic to provide a (mostly) happy conclusion. The interplay of science, spirituality, history and romance will satisfy. Ages 12-up.
Customer Reviews
Can’t believe I stumbled across this book again!
Similar to a review already posted here, I first read this book when I bought it at my middle school’s Scholastic Book Fair many many years ago. I would read it once a year after its purchase but somewhere along the line the book was misplaced. I have spent the last few years trying to remember its name (as all I could recall was the distinct underwater dress on the cover) so I could repurchase it. I am overjoyed to have found it here on Apple Books and I cannot wait to add this back into my yearly reading cycle. As an avid reader, I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves fiction with romance and some historical accuracy sprinkled in. 10/10!
Well written and enjoyed since 2009
Until it was misplaced and never found, I never went anywhere without my paperback copy of Distant Waves. I originally purchased the book in 2009 as an eleven year old and as I near my twenties, I find the book to still be highly enjoyable. The book covers many interesting characters and topics such as feminist characters, race and racism in the 1910s, dysfunctional families, and the spiritualist movement. In regards to history, the book does a fantastic job covering the life of Nikola Tesla and a riveting though fictional account of the Titanic's sinking. Love the book just as much as I did seven years ago and I can't praise it enough.
