The Instant New York Times Bestseller
"From “Family Guy” to his own Instagram account, Janetti has been behind some of his generation’s greatest comedy. This book of essays is no exception."
— The New York Times
Fans of David Sedaris, Jenny Lawson, and Tina Fey… meet your new friend Gary Janetti.
Gary Janetti, the writer and producer for some of the most popular television comedies of all time, and creator of one of the most wickedly funny Instagram accounts there is, now turns his skills to the page in a hilarious, and poignant book chronicling the pains and indignities of everyday life.
Gary spends his twenties in New York, dreaming of starring on soap operas while in reality working at a hotel where he lusts after an unattainable colleague and battles a bellman who despises it when people actually use a bell to call him. He chronicles the torture of finding a job before the internet when you had to talk on the phone all the time, and fantasizes, as we all do, about who to tell off when he finally wins an Oscar. As Gary himself says, “These are essays from my childhood and young adulthood about things that still annoy me.”
Original, brazen, and laugh out loud funny, Do You Mind If I Cancel? is something not to be missed.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Will & Grace writer and producer Gary Janetti’s memoir is a loose collection of remembrances that detail what it was like to be gay before social media existed—he had to use analog means to find love and acceptance (and success: in one acting class he suffered a near-breakdown he compares to conversion therapy). From one-liners like “If Hitler were gay we’d all be speaking German,” you know he’s not afraid to drop a quip that stops conversation, but you’ll also be touched when he explains how One Life to Live helped him through his first breakup. Do You Mind If I Cancel? is a coming-of-age story unlike any we’ve read before.
Customer Reviews
Funny and well written
A blast to read with a unique writing style - I laughed out loud many times!
Excellent Light Read
This was the perfect light read I needed - sandwiched between a laborious book laden with bad luck, and my next political memoir penned by a VP…
Back to ‘Cancel.’
Poignant essays of a man trying to find himself.
Perfect bites that make you think.
Bites that’ll eventually trigger an “Oof, I’ve been there.”
… for me anyway…
Looking forward to peppering Gary’s future stories along the way - I see two more!
This is truly fantastic!
We just finished Gary’s audiobook and laughed our way thru most of its chapters. His work is reminiscent of Augusten Burroughs and David Sedaris. The bellman stories in particular made us howl! The book also chronicles Gary’s journey as a young boy coming to terms with his intrinsic self and in this journey he shares the loneliness of his elementary school years, his first encounters with the gay community, his first love. These touching moments combined with his brutal honesty and witty humor make DO YOU MIND IF I CANCEL the perfect read.
