INTRODUCTION Surveys of academic economists in the United States conducted in 1995 and 2000 by Becker and Watts (2001) find that "instructor-developed problem sets are popular in all courses". While these problem sets are an important component of teaching strategies employed in economics courses, only little systematic study has been devoted to how these homework assignments have to be administered in order to be effective, a notable exception being the paper by Grove and Wasserman (2006a).
