Double Play

At Yardley School, where a New England river, marshes, and old rivalries frame the life of a proud boarding academy, Dan Vinton returns from Christmas vacation to a term full of promise, pressure, and change. Warm winter weather, returning boys, and the familiar pulse of school routines set the stage as Dan shows his steady, easy confidence by comforting homesick Merrow and preparing to help Gerald Pennimore, the wealthy new roommate whose sheltered background makes him an object of curiosity and sympathy. Gerald's arrival ties Yardley to a dramatic family story: Dan once rescued him and a dog from a burning playhouse, earning the gratitude of John T. Pennimore, the "Steamship King," who now entrusts Dan with helping his son adjust. With Dan's guidance and his father's encouragement, Gerald begins to face boarding-school life, learning that hard work matters as much as privilege. As spring quickens the school, baseball, tennis, track, and debate all stir fresh rivalries. Dan works to earn a place on the team, Gerald throws himself into the game, and the boys' teasing, loyalty, and competition reveal a lively school world shaped by friendship, status, and athletic ambition.
