Dragon Ball review
Amazing tale! This being the final volume is an amazing book! The color really adds something! I have read Dragon Ball Z ( Dragon Ball 17-42 in Japan) and it is much better experience than reading it in black and white. ( what it looks like in the volumes) I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an amazing volume and amazing art and amazing humor! Please GET THIS BOOK! I hope that this review helped. Thanks for reading my review!
Completely fabricated translation throughout.
Although I'm not a big fan of Viz's English translation of the Dragon Ball series, I do own several volumes by Viz. While their text translation isn't perfect, I think they range from good to very good in all the volumes I own. This volume, however, is one of the worst translations I've ever seen of anything. I've never even seen fan translations this bad.
A lot of the translations are completely fabricated and are nothing even remotely close to the original Japanese text. For example in the Japanese version, when Kuririn and Gohan return, Kuririn says something like, "Wa... wait, Gohan. I'll go with you!" Viz translated this to, "Gohan, you're crazy! And I guess... so am I!" Two pages later, when Vegeta transforms, Goku says something like, "What... What's going on!!!" Viz translated this to, "I've... I've heard of apes like you!!!" In the next page, Goku says, "Giant ape... Giant ape monster." Viz translated this to, "My grandpa! You killed my grandpa!"
As you can see, these translations are not even remotely close to the original text. While a few instances of incorrect texts are acceptable, pretty much the whole book is like this. I really wonder if the translator didn't have access to the Japanese text and made up his own text. That's how inaccurate and frequent these text issues are.
I was rather shocked since volumes 1 and 2 (of the full color Saiyan volumes) were translated well enough, and according to the credits, the translation was done by the same people as the previous volumes.
Viz really needs to do a better job. I paid for an English translation of Dragon Ball. This is not an English translation; It's a completely fake product.
