Edward Payson Roe (March 7, 1838 – July 19, 1888) is an American writer, priest and pastor. Edward Payson Roe was born in Moodna, Orange County, New York. He studied at Williams College and at Auburn Theological Seminary. During the American Civil War, he wrote articles for newspapers and then lectured about the war and wrote for periodicals. At the time, he was a very popular novelist, especially among middle-class people. His novels have been translated into several European languages.

The author imagined no actual experience, but he have sought to present one which might be verified in real life. He have tried to avoid all that would be impossible or even improbable. The labors performed by the children in the story were not unknown to many people, in childhood, nor would they form tasks too severe for many little hands now idle in the cities.
