Publisher Description
“Drum Talk” is a teaching method created by musician and educator Marc Wagnon, combining multi-cultural rhythms (Africa, Middle East, Brazil & Cuba) and does not require students to have any previous knowledge of music technique. This system allows the group to attain a level of complexity that would normally demand longer preparation. Its goal is to give an experience in group music making, and ranges from simple concepts to complex polyrhythms. The book of 10 lessons contains 58 video clips and 86 musical examples.
This new method is designed primarily, but not exclusively, for teachers and music therapists. The method is based on group dynamics, and starts by singing the polyrhythms and various drum strokes before playing them on instruments, an adaptation from the West African way of transmitting drumming knowledge. The students learn to focus and concentrate in an enjoyable setting, as well as receiving the satisfaction that comes from working together to achieve a common goal. “Drum Talk” may also be utilized to facilitate conflict/resolution and other social issues for children and adults alike.
There are several facets to this program that are designed to cater to the various needs of educators and/or students. The "Drum Talk" iBook includes a series of video clips combined with traditional western notation. This combination demonstrates the process so that the expected outcome is clear for those who are more comfortable in reading the rhythms in western notation.
In addition, there is an extensive glossary of terms that cross-reference all new words and concepts (musical, instrumental, historical and geographical), so as to add depth to the experience of utilizing this book.
