My Fair Duchess
A vow at the time of his birth has shaped Colin, the Duke of Aversley, into a jaded man. A man who does not trust women and classifies them all into deceitful lot – his mother being the top offender.
Lady Amelia De Vere has long held 2 beliefs – 1) she’s not pretty and 2) she’s in love with Charles, the young Lord who rescued her when she was young.
When Colin receives notice that his best friend, Phillip, is to wed he makes his way to the estate to talk him out of it. Receiving a request from his mother he stops there first – the reason: his beloved father left a letter to be delivered to Colin after his death and if Colin had not married by the age of 25. A letter that states Colin must marry FOR LOVE before the age of 26 or lose all his inheritance that is not entailed. Making his way to his Phillip’s estate Colin stews on this information. Upon arriving at Phillip’s estate Colin realizes things have changed and the dire financial circumstances that Phillip faces. Crafting a way to give Phillip the money he needs without Phillip refusing, Colin bets Phillip that he can polish up his sister and prove that she will become like all women – want nothing more than money and title. If Colin wins then he pays all of Phillips debts and if Phillip wins Colin will marry Amelia (which solves his problem of a wife) and never mention giving money to Phillip again.
Amelia finds herself fascinated by her brother’s friend, the cold emotionless Colin, and is extremely grateful when he fetches Phillip from the town pub where he has gone to drown his failed engagement. After returning from a humiliating outing Amelia finds out about the wager. At first she’s totally against it – she shouldn’t need false pretenses to earn the love and attention of a man. Until she realizes this is Colin’s way of helping Phillip and since she has not intentions of changing she doesn’t worry about Phillip losing the bet.
Oh how the seemingly simple becomes so complicated. The more time Colin spends with Amelia the more he realizes the true goodness within her. The more time Amelia spends with Colin the more she sees the tortured soul. Will either one of them realize their love for the other. If Colin does will he recognize it for what it is? Will old fights, lurking evil, a mother willing to do anything to save her children and a mother wanting to repair her relationship with her son help or hinder their love?
Julie Johnstone does an amazing job of playing to an emotional rollercoaster starting from the prologue. Not only is there excellent interaction between the main characters but involving secondary characters as well. My Fair Duchess will have you rooted to your seat from the very beginning to the very end. Fair warning – be prepared for you heart to fill then drop as each scene plays out. A definite A++ book in my opinion.
My Seductive Innocent
Believing in the hope her deceased mother's letter gives her, Sophia Vane works for her abusive father but has been stashing money away so that she & her half-brother can escape & make a better life for themselves.
With a mother that was verbally abusive & denied any love, it's no wonder that Nathaniel Ellison, the Duke of Scarsdale, has hardened his heart. The only affection he lets come to light is for his lame cousin, who he feels responsible for because he feels he caused his lameness.
Nathaniel wonders into the tavern where Sophia works & comes to her rescue when she's being accosted by her father's right hand man. When he asks for directions, Sophia offers to show him the way; however, they are held up before they reach their destination. When Nathaniel is injured Sophia takes him back to her father's tavern where he tries to use the situation to his advantage.
Wanting nothing to do with her father's plans, Sophia realizes she & her brother must leave immediately whether they have the money or not. On his way leaving the town, Nathaniel again runs into Sophia & admires the way she is handling the person who her father sold her brother to. Realizing that the only way to repay Sophia & repair her reputation is to marry her.
Through a series of misunderstandings, a vicious aunt, a vindictive ex-mistress and attempts on his life can Nathaniel soften his heart to love Sophia. Will Sophia's love withstand all that happens?
Absolutely LOVED this story! Julie Johnstone outdid herself with this one. Expect the unexpected - not everyone is who they seem & situations aren't always what they seem!!! Definitely a heart pounding, breath stealing read!!!
