Abstract. This article underscores the need for testimony--the saying of what should be said about traumatic experiences--particularly in countries such as Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay, faced with a legacy of terror. Testimony is presented as a way to reassemble subjectivity left in shambles by the "death factory". Tejas Verdes (1978), written by Chilean writer Hernan Valdes after suffering systematic torture, is analyzed as one example of the effects of radical exclusion and degradation. In North America the debates on testimony have reached an impasse after more than a decade of intense theoretical discussion. In the Southern Cone the interest on memory and testimony has developed, especially after the year 2000. With the new agenda focusing on human rights, these governments are finally dealing not only with the legal prosecution of those responsible for crimes against humanity but also with the symbolic and cultural aspects of this sinister past.
