I hope this becomes a series
Eliza Mace by Sarah Burton and Jem Poster is a winning tale of a young woman coming into adulthood, of reaching the understanding that not everyone or everything is as welcoming and pleasant as they might seem to a child.
The story is a murder mystery, yes, but also a coming of age story. Eliza is a young Welsh woman of 16, a member of the gentry, but whose family fortunes—and their country house—have deteriorated. They have deteriorated because Eliza’s ne’er-do-well father has wasted the family fortune on ill-considered business deals, and has dragged them deeply into debt. Then Dad goes missing. Eliza aids police constable Dafydd Pritchard as they seek to determine what became of him. Along the way she wrestles with her biases: what secrets are her family and trusted friends who raised her hiding?
Burton and Poster are excellent writers, and the story is deeply engaging. They show fine skill in creating the Welsh countryside and Eliza’s family. They maintain tension throughout the telling. Eliza Mace is a good story well worth the reading.
