Princess Lu knows that the throne of the Empire of the First Flame rightfully belongs to her. After all, she is the late Emperor's firstborn and has trained for the role all her life. And she can't forget made a promise to shapeshifter Nok, the boy she came to love, to win justice for his now powerless people. But even with an army at her side, Lu will need to face down a major obstacle: the current sitting Empress, her once beloved younger sister, Min.

Princess Min used to live in Lu's shadow. But now she can control a powerful, ancient magic, and she's determined to use it to forge her own path and a strong future for the Empire, even if that means making enemies in court. But Min's magic isn't entirely under her control, and she must learn how to tame it before it consumes her . . . and the entire realm.

Lu and Min are set for a confrontation that can't be stopped. But the Empire faces threats greater than their rivalry, and even if they choose to stand together, it could cost them both the throne-or their lives.

Some spoilers if you haven’t read yet !

I have a emotional attachment to this book series! Every character in this book has a special place in my heart. It was such a beautiful journey to read this book. As a Asian person I feel so seen and represented because of how the author was able to deliver such amazing fantasy using Asian characters and a lot of Asian culture in this book.
So now that I said everything I love about this book I’ll say some of things that I felt could have been a little better.
When I first started the first book I was bored but what got me hooked was the slow burn romance between Nok and Lu. Their relationship was so beautifully written and their feelings and personal thoughts felt very realistic. Towards the end for the second book I was highly disappointed with how rushed everything felt. It was disappointing because the first book and most of second is very detailed and has the reader hooked on to the characters feelings and the current situation. I felt no connection for the ending. I didn’t even process Lu’s death because of how rushed it all was. I feel like Lu sacrificing herself was so out of place. If there had been more build up, like maybe nok could have been there for the last moments fighting on the ship with them , and then Lu does the Whole giving min the powers because she sees the people she loves in a life or death situation and her and Nok have a whole goodbye moment and he’s refusing to leave her but she’s telling him to take min away, they have no time so she just pushes them or something. I don’t know but honestly any kind of build up would have been nice. Also there could have been more pov’s from Nok. The ending made me feel so sad to not be walked through his love for Lu or anything. It was so abruptly ended.
Ok but I wrote this very long review because this was a very special book to read and I am honored to have been able to read it. Everything I felt was purely just my opinion I’m not the author so I don’t know the real vision or understanding behind the ending but besides the ending I loved everything!
I truly felt like I was transported into this world.
