Publisher Description
The astonishing saga of polar explorer Ernest Shackleton's survival for over a year on the ice-bound Antarctic seas, as Time magazine put it, "defined heroism." Alfred Lansing's scrupulously researched and brilliantly narrated book -- with over 200,000 copies sold -- has long been acknowledged as the definitive account of the Endurance's fateful trip. To write their authoritative story, Lansing consulted with ten of the surviving members and gained access to diaries and personal accounts by eight others. The resulting book has all the immediacy of a first-hand account, expanded with maps and illustrations especially for this edition.

Survival of the fittest
Having just finished a trip that took me through some of the waters these amazing men braved, I think I have an even better appreciation of their incredible accomplishments. May Sir Ernest Shackleton and all the men involved rest in well deserved peace. This excellent book helped to preserve their unmatchable story.
Great book of survival and triumph of the spirit
I like all the variety of journals and story telling you get a real feel for the men and the journey
Compelling
One of the most stark and compelling stories I’ve ever read. From the first page to the last there’s attention and the feeling that you are there with those 27 men. It is an amazing story of bravery, exceptional leadership, and the overwhelming will human nature to survive. Ernest Shackleton has to be one of the bravest, most inspiring leaders of generations. A must read.
