Mind Expanding Conclusion to the Engines of Light Trilogy
“Engine City” is a novel by Ken McLeod and the third and final book in his Engines of Light Trilogy. It picks up where the second book, “Dark Light”left off.
It’s an interesting story, with a variety of sentient species, some of which are hominids. There are also intelligent giant squids commonly known as Krakens, and intelligent and long lived dinosaur-derived bipeds simply known as Saurs. All of these species originated from Earth, and were removed from there and transported to other worlds by The Gods. All except for the human Cosmonauts, who traveled to the stars themselves.
The human starships based on The Bright Star are expanding into the Second Sphere. They encounter a strange new species of hominid, that are semi-aquatic and seal-like. The origin of these beings is a mystery, and the answer to thier origin leads to an expanding alien race known as the Multipliers. Are these aliens a threat, or can they become part of the larger culture. Can a symbiotic relationship be reached?
This is a complex story, and it resolves the trilogy with an ending that is literally mind expanding. This is big-idea space opera, but it has relatable characters and interesting settings. I think it is an appropriate outcome for the series, but make sure to read the epilogue for a brighter conclusion.
