Publisher Description

Ernie Pyle’s human and unforgettable picture of England under the Blitzkrieg—a deeply moving story of courage and faith.

Ernie Pyle in England, first published in 1941, is the account of the journalist’s stay in England, Scotland and Wales during the height of the German bombing blitz on London and other cities of the United Kingdom.

Pyle, one of the most famous correspondents of the Second World War, had an easy-going, folksy-style of writing, making the book an enjoyable yet informative read about the conditions he encountered. His descriptions of the effects of the bombing, nights spent in air raid shelters, food- and gas-rationing, and daily life in London remain classic pieces of war-time reporting.

Understated and moving . An important book for all time . We must remember .

I read my first Ernie Pyle book in the early 70’s when I was in high school. My father shared a memory of when he was in high school . His father , my grandfather ( not hard to figure out ) was away in WWII fighting in the army . My dad read Ernie Pyle’s dispatches in the local paper . He told me he just could not believe it when Ernie died . When I went to England and France in the 1980’s I was reminded many times of Americans being in England during the war . For instance when visiting St Paul’s I was bowled over by the inscription on one of the floors dedicating the alter to American servicemen . This book gives a look into the lives of Everyman at that time as only Ernie Pyle can do . Best book I’ve read in a long while . Highly recommend .

I loved this picture of wartime England and am going to read the rest of his books that I have not read yet.
