Ethiopia is one of the oldest independent nations in the world, and one of the world's oldest Christian states (rivalling only Armenia in this regard). It has long been an intersection between the civilizations of North Africa, the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Much of Ethiopia is a high plateau with central mountain ranges divided by the Great Rift Valley, but there are low-lying lands in the eastern and westernmost parts, with the lowest point being the Danakil Depression.

Three major crops are believed to have originated in Ethiopia: coffee, grain sorghum, and castor bean.
