Evelina

Fanny Burney (1752-1840) was an English writer working in the genre of epistolary novel. Her literary legacy counts up to four novels, eight plays, one biography and twenty volumes of journals and letters. Fanny Burney is considered a predecessor of such a genre as ‘novel of manners’ - the genre of Jane Austen and Thackeray. In her works Burney explored the day-to-day life of the english upper-class.


‘Evelina, or the History of a Young Lady’s Entrance into the World’ i a novel by Fanny Burney that was initially published in 1778. The work is written in the form of letters that reveal the main character of the story - Evelina, a daughter of an English nobleman who has to be brought up in rural seclusion. The novel features elements of sensibility and romanticism.
