APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Psychological-suspense master Peter Swanson returns with a novel that feels like a 21st-century gender-flip on the ’80s classic Fatal Attraction. Before her wedding to a sweetly attentive tech tycoon, Abigail impulsively sleeps with a complete stranger during her bachelorette weekend. She’d like to go back home and pretend the whole thing never happened—but the stranger has other ideas about that. He shows up first at her wedding—and then on her honeymoon. We were feeling every ounce of Abigail’s paranoia as the tension ratchets up through one shocking twist after another until she’s fighting not just for her new marriage but for her life. You won’t be able to look away as this intense thriller turns the dream of wedded bliss into an adrenaline-fueled nightmare.
This suspenseful thriller from Swanson (Eight Perfect Murders) explores a familiar genre theme the consequences of entering a marriage with a guilty secret. As Abigail Baskin faces her approaching wedding to wealthy Bruce Lamb, she's wracked with guilt over sleeping with someone else during her bachelorette party weekend. Her situation becomes even more fraught when that one-night stand, whom she only knows as Scottie, starts stalking her. After Scottie sends Abigail an email suggesting they share a deep connection and she should cancel the nuptials, she goes ahead with the wedding, but fears Scottie's continuing obsession with her. She hopes for a respite when Bruce spirits her away for their honeymoon on a Maine island, but that's dashed when Scottie appears there as well, setting in motion a deadly series of events that imperils her life. Credible, fully realized characters and tense situations compensate for plot twists that aren't as memorable as in Swanson's best work. Many readers will devour this page-turner in one sitting. \n
Good read, ending was unexpected but liked it.
Every Vow You Break
I enjoy reading this author’s books, but this one was predictable. Was still surprised at the level of rot among the antagonists. Skipped about 100 pages and just read the last 10 pages. The term “nouveau riche” and stereotype of newly wealthy people lacking good taste and morals certainly apply to some characters in this book. To be so well educated, grounded, and experienced, Abigail seemed too gullible and dumb. When red flags appear daily, look out. If something seems too good to be true, it is.
Peter Swanson is a genius!
Yet another of Peter Swanson’s books that I adore. A fast-paced, well-written thriller that I finished in 24 hours. Strongly recommend!
