This is the second book in the series ‘Help your child master numeracy’ written by dyscalculia expert Ronit Bird. This series provides parents with practical ideas for activities and games designed to help their child develop a better feel for numbers.

The idea that drives this book is that we should be teaching numeracy for understanding, in a hands-on and multi-sensory way, and not through rote-learning or memorised tricks and procedures. Working with Cuisenaire rods is an ideal way to explore numbers and the relationships between numbers in a way that enables children to discover facts for themselves and develop true conceptual understanding.

Embedded throughout the book are a total of 30 demonstration videos with a total running time of 2 hours. These videos show you exactly what to do and what to say as you work through the games and activities with your child.

Another brilliant book in the series!

Ronit Bird’s C-Rods book picks up where Dots leaves off, moving from single digits to multiple digits for addition and subtraction. You’ll cover bridging, place value, all the basics. She found holes in my son’s thinking that I would not have even expected and had perfect activities to remediate them. For instance, we realized my son could not find pages in a book, and the Ronit Bird activities were perfect to carry over from number lines to real life with books to make that happen.

I’d like to say this is a fast process, a miracle cure. My son has dyscalculia and other learning disabilities on top of his autism, so for him everything takes time. Ronit Bird gives me the most thorough explanations of anything I’ve found for getting into his head and helping him really UNDERSTAND the concepts. We’ve enjoyed the games and many were simple enough to hand to ABA workers to do with him. For instance, we used thin foam printed with monkeys to make the frame from one of the games and called it Monkey Math. Fun stuff, very motivating.

This book pairs well with games like Clumsy Thief and hands-on activities with measuring tapes, mass scales, etc.. If you are looking for the ruler she uses that holds the c-rods, I just noticed Timberdoodle is selling it.

We recently began her Multiplication ebook and are definitely looking forward to her Fractions book.
