Publisher Description

Why do Christians—even mature Christians—still sin so often? Why doesn’t God set us free? We seem to notice more sin in our lives all the time, and we wonder if our progress is a constant disappointment to God. Where is the joy and peace we read about in the Bible?

Speaking from her own struggles, Barbara Duguid turns to the writings of John Newton to teach us God’s purpose for our failure and guilt—and to help us adjust our expectations of ourselves. Her empathetic, honest approach lifts our focus from our own performance back to the God who is bigger than our failures—and who uses them for his glory. Rediscover how God’s extravagant grace makes the gospel once again feel like the good news it truly is!

Excellent! Buy one for yourself and a friend and read it together!

Excellent treatment of the struggles we have with understanding the process of sanctification. I mean, since God will eventually free us completely from sin, make us pure and holy, just like Jesus when we get to Heaven, why doesn't he just do that now? He must have some good purposes for our continuing to struggle with sin. Jesus said "Apart from me, you can do nothing." One of Duguid's main theses in the book is that God's purpose in sanctification is for us to be more humble, dependent and thankful; what we are usually taught is the exact opposite: that we should sin less and less and be more and more victorious. This is a challenging book, with lots of borrowing from the life and letters of the former slave trader and pastor, John Newton. And I agree with Stephen Altrogge. Buy it, read it and re-read it.

Extravagant Grace

Wonderful! Gets to the core of how God operates in our lives. I have always seen the Scriptures communicating a God who loves us and is deeply involved in every aspect of our lives; including the control of our sin. The author clearly shows that God is not the agent of our sinning, but He is not surprised by it, but uses it for His glory.

Incredibly helpful

Barbara Duguid does something simply amazing, she lays out a practical explanation of the Christian life. She reminds us of the reality of sovereign grace at work in our spiritual growth so God uses all things, including our very sin, to draw us into a humble, dependent relationship with Him. If you struggle with sin and temptation, wondering why you just can't seem to get it, you need to buy this book!
