Judging a Book by it's Cover:
Cover initially triggers thoughts of a Mystery / Thriller. The couple embracing was just enough to make me think to add "Romantic" to the list of categories. The synopsis sounded very intriguing.
Looking Deeper:
Third person POV.
Cullen is the homicide detective overseeing a newly-opened cold case. Nicky is the youth worker that grew up believing her mother abandoned her, her sister, and dad two decades ago - until she's approached by Cullen one morning. Their chemistry can only be described as volatile at the start, only warming up over time. The story is a Murder Mystery / Thriller first and foremost. Sexual tension begins building ever-so slowly and it's not until approximately three-quarters through the book before a move is made in that direction, with clear intent. There are plenty of additional cast members to keep you on your toes and always guessing, and second-guessing, at your own theories of "whodunit".
There is not a single thing that I did not like about this book. The characters were well developed and perfectly flawed. The dialogue, interaction and chemistry between the cast was realistic and believable. The plot was dynamic and it had depth and layers, giving it a full, rich body. Ms. Kingwell's writing style is fantastic. I've not read a book in a single sitting in quite some time. In a word, this book was RIVETING.
Although I'd initially correctly suspected the identity of the "other man" at 15%, I was made to second-guess myself. And I'd guessed the relationship at 27%. However, I once again had some doubts and was never certain of the whodunit until it was in play, unfolding before my eyes. WELL DONE! The conclusion is solid, for the most part... although I would have liked to have had an epilogue glimpsing into the outcome of Nicky's family members. This had everything... Suspense, Action, Drama, Murder, Mystery, Thrills and enough sexual tension to keep you buzzing until the Romance kicked in.
