Life was complicated enough as a gay man in Florida, but once Robyn Fields tried coming out as a trans woman, everything fell apart. Reverting to boymode for her own safety, Robyn fled to a California mountain town to inherit her grandfather's burned-down farm. She already made it 27 years; what's the harm in a few more years in the closet? Needing help to restore the farm, Robyn recruits the three local queer people who helped her after her grandfather's disastrous funeral.

One of the new farmers is the recently disinherited vineyard heir, Ash Grantor. Ash has known he was a trans man for a decade, but he quietly repressed it because it didn't fit his plans. Easier to be a lesbian than a straight trans guy, he tells himself. How to reconcile that identity with his inexplicable crush on his new gay farmer roommate? No time to worry about that! Ash's greedy father has eyes on the farmland, and Ash needs to do whatever it takes to help Robyn's farm thrive out of spite.

But the farmwork is disrupted by the strange humanoid shadows that lurk on the foggy mountaintops. The dark watchers are said to be responsible for many local disappearances and suspicious deaths, including that of Robyn's grandfather. Unsettlingly, Robyn and Ash are the only two people who can see them. They should probably do something about that if they want any chance to restore the farm... or to avoid the bizarre and haunting fate of Robyn's grandfather and so many others.
