USA TODAY Bestseller
Return to The Meridian with New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Roanhorse’s sequel to the most critically hailed epic fantasy of 2020 Black Sun—finalist for the Hugo, Nebula, Lambda, and Locus awards.
There are no tides more treacherous than those of the heart. —Teek saying
The great city of Tova is shattered. The sun is held within the smothering grip of the Crow God’s eclipse, but a comet that marks the death of a ruler and heralds the rise of a new order is imminent.
The Meridian: a land where magic has been codified and the worship of gods suppressed. How do you live when legends come to life, and the faith you had is rewarded?
As sea captain Xiala is swept up in the chaos and currents of change, she finds an unexpected ally in the former Priest of Knives. For the Clan of Matriarchs of Tova, tense alliances form as far-flung enemies gather and the war in the heavens is reflected upon the earth.
And for Serapio and Naranpa, both now living avatars, the struggle for free will and personhood in the face of destiny rages. How will Serapio stay human when he is steeped in prophecy and surrounded by those who desire only his power? Is there a future for Naranpa in a transformed Tova without her total destruction?
Welcome back to the fantasy series of the decade in Fevered Star—book two of Between Earth and Sky from one of the “Indigenous novelists reshaping North American science fiction, horror, and fantasy” (The New York Times) and the “epic voice of our continent and time” (Ken Liu, award-winning author of The Grace of Kings).
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
With an uneasy truce barely holding back the destructive tide of war, the three powerful characters in this spellbinding fantasy must grapple with whom to trust…and whom to love. In the follow-up to her groundbreaking Black Sun, Rebecca Roanhorse’s epic adventure follows exiled sea captain Xiala, supernatural being Serapio, and priestess Naranpa as they fight for the beleaguered city of Tova, where enemy clans vie for dominance and the sun is in permanent eclipse. In chapters that alternate between points of view, these three compelling characters ground us in the sprawling tale as they navigate the city’s cutthroat politics as well as their own emerging powers. We loved the way Roanhorse beautifully incorporates elements of Native American folklore like animal gods and earth magic into her vivid tale. Fevered Star pulled us into a dangerous world of valor, bravery, and characters we’ll never forget.

Second Volume in Between Earth and Sky
Fevered Star
is a decidedly different alternative world fantasy novel by Rebecca Roanhorse. It’s a complex novel, and is the second volume in a series known as Between Earth and Sky.
This novel is different in that it has a very different setting, it’s roughly based on pre-Columbian American civilizations. There is an increasing amount of magic, and a few forms of giant sentient animals. The religious systems are also novel and different. This is pretty refreshing, as so many fantasy novels seem to be based on European history.
While there are an increasing number of characters, Serapio, Xiala, Okoa, and Naranpa remain central to the story. More of both the history of the world and new locations are revealed. I found it a memorable and interesting story. The recently announced third book in the Between Earth and Sky Series is called “Mirrored Heavens” and I had to add it to my want to read list.
Anticipated Return
I started Black Sun a few years ago and put Fevered Star as my most anticipated book to read and it did not disappoint. Every page progressed with purpose. The author crafted a world that makes you believe in sorcery and magic once again.
Refreshing.
The plot moves along at a good clip, and some plot twists truly surprised me, which was much appreciated.
