Second Volume in Between Earth and Sky
Fevered Star
is a decidedly different alternative world fantasy novel by Rebecca Roanhorse. It’s a complex novel, and is the second volume in a series known as Between Earth and Sky.
This novel is different in that it has a very different setting, it’s roughly based on pre-Columbian American civilizations. There is an increasing amount of magic, and a few forms of giant sentient animals. The religious systems are also novel and different. This is pretty refreshing, as so many fantasy novels seem to be based on European history.
While there are an increasing number of characters, Serapio, Xiala, Okoa, and Naranpa remain central to the story. More of both the history of the world and new locations are revealed. I found it a memorable and interesting story. The recently announced third book in the Between Earth and Sky Series is called “Mirrored Heavens” and I had to add it to my want to read list.
Anticipated Return
I started Black Sun a few years ago and put Fevered Star as my most anticipated book to read and it did not disappoint. Every page progressed with purpose. The author crafted a world that makes you believe in sorcery and magic once again.
Refreshing.
The plot moves along at a good clip, and some plot twists truly surprised me, which was much appreciated.
