“Fiction History of Ships” chronicles two imaginary island kingdoms and their competition in naval architecture. The sweep of centuries is marked by periodic breakthroughs, incremental improvements, technological dead-ends, and embarrassing fiascos. Of course, no historical record, even a fictional one, is complete without illustrating how curiosity, pride, fear, aggression, mismanagement, and duplicity affect the development of civilizations.
