Set in Mississippi and Missouri in the 1970s, this strong debut novel tackles harrowing if familiar themes of family violence and abuse. As the fifth child in a family of eight siblings, Odessa Blackburn sees herself as the "invisible middle" of her family. Sexually abused by her alcoholic father early in life and then again in late childhood, Odessa feels herself pushed away by her enabling mother and alienated by her own siblings, each of whom has a different strategy for coping with the family dysfunction. As Odessa grows up, she learns that her mother is having an affair with her father's older brother, Leland, and when her father learns of it and murders Leland, Odessa is the only witness. While little new territory is covered here from a literary standpoint, Lockhart's narrative is straightforward and lyrical, Odessa's voice is believable and the evolution of her character in the face of overwhelming alienation is as engaging as it is heartbreaking.

Wonderful.
This is my third time reading this book, everytime I read this wonderful story it captures my whole mind were I can see every detail like a movie in which I can not put the book down. One of my favorites of all time.

I hated for this book to end. Like a good movie, I hated for it to end. For this to be Zelda's first novel, this book was a very Great read. I read lots of first novels and it's very rare that one held my attention the way this one did. Not that I'm a book critic or nothing but as a reader, I know a good read when I are one and this one was Excellent. I hope this is not your only novel Zelda and I'm looking forward to your next one. Again, good job and I enjoyed every page especially the surprise ending!!! Kudos!!!!!

All I can say, is you must read this book. I read tis book in five hours I could not put it down. Wow! Bravo! Bravo!
