Description de l’éditeur

An action-packed Star Trek original series–era novel, this epic space adventure follows Commander George Samuel Kirk aboard the newly launched USS Enterprise as Starfleet’s first mission leads into dangerous Romulan territory and a conflict that could reshape the galaxy.

Before Captain James T. Kirk made history, his father, George Samuel Kirk, served aboard the Enterprise under the command of Captain Robert April. With Starfleet newly formed and the Federation still finding its footing, the Enterprise embarks on its maiden deep-space mission—one that will test the limits of diplomacy, exploration, and interstellar warfare.

Venturing into the heart of hostile Romulan space, the crew confronts political intrigue, advanced weapons technology, and a growing threat that endangers a hundred innocent worlds. As tensions rise between the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire, the fate of entire star systems may depend on the courage and leadership of one officer—and the legacy he will pass on.

Blending classic Star Trek exploration, first-contact diplomacy, and high-stakes space combat, this official tie-in novel expands the early history of Starfleet and the Enterprise in the years before Captain Kirk’s legendary five-year mission.

I am fairly certain that I read this one too

I am fairly certain I read this book but it would have come out a lot earlier than 2013. And I think I enjoyed it, because I seem to remember the pre-TOS books with Kirk's dad and the Captain in the sweater.

Very Clever Story

This is my favorite book in the Star Trek universe. Considering how many there are that's saying something.
The authors ability to present a story that can't possibly mesh with the original TV series and then turn it around in the last couple chapters to mesh perfectly is a delight to read.

The story also captures the intent of the original series that is missing in almost all other science-fiction series, that the human race moves out into space to explore and to handle circumstances as they develop, not that we are forced out into space because of circumstances and are desperately trying to fix something.
