There have been numerous instances of fires in residential and commercial complexes/facilities having claimed many lives. All the lives were lost due to inadequate measures to prevent fires or inadequate means of controlling the fires and rescuing the people. However with awareness and technological advancements things are much better today and Fire safety is now an integral part of designing, constructing and running any facility. While there are passive measures which are mostly taken care of during the design stage i.e. selection of materials, evacuation routes etc, active measures include means of detecting and fighting fires.
