Firebird is a bright orange baby oriole who just loves the sunshine. But whenever a storm blows in, he frets and asks Mama why God allows the rain to take the sun away. It’s a rough flight, and just when he’s about to give up, Firebird rises above the storm to discover the sun shining where it always had been.

Firebird is a children’s book that parallels the life of Samantha Crawford, a storybook artist in the inspiring new film Unconditional (scheduled for a theatrical launch in fall 2012) who has lost sight of God’s love.

Fairytale motifs, Disney-style illustrations (Corley and Vollmer are Disney animators) and theological questions combine in this tale of Firebird, a big-eyed baby oriole who "just lived for the sunshine," and cannot understand why God would "let the storm take the sun away." Full-bleed, full-spread paintings depict a bird-centered world of sunny days with luxurious green vines and hills, and stormy days with purplish gray clouds showering streaks of rain. While Firebird's mother gives initial evasive answers to her unhappy bird's questions, eventually she encourages him to ride into the storm and learn the answer for himself. One painting shows terrified Firebird dodging lightning and buffeted by powerful winds, while the next page reveals Firebird's ecstatic face witnessing the glowing rays above the clouds, making him realize the storm has not eliminated the sun. Uncomplicated illustrations and plot-line enable McCorkle (director of the film Unconditional) and Parker (A Night Night Prayer) to engage the complicated theological question of why an all-powerful God allows bad things to happen, and offer the consoling message of God's eternal presence even during stormy times. Ages 4-up.

My baby’s favorite
I read this beautiful book to my baby who was born at 23 weeks throughout our stay in the NICU and I still read it to him 7 months later! He reacts to the pictures and loves when I read it to him! Safe to say that this book is our absolute favorite!

It was recently updated! Such a great book. Love that it now has the read aloud version!!!!
It has a little study guide at the end and even has read a longs for the little ones!

Watching the Movie Unconditional really opened my eyes and touched my life. This book had a great part in the film
